My dad always told me that if I did not learn something everyday, that I had wasted the entire day.
I probably learn more about knifemaking each day now than I did for 30 years as an Engineer and prototype developer.
Prototyping, and my tool maker experience as an apprentice probably gave me more usable skills toward making
high-end knives than any other skills I have developed over the years, but thinking way outside of the "BOX" certainly
makes it's impression on the final result. I am told that I think SO FAR OUT OF THE BOX that I think
OUT OF THE CUBE. ( I believe that is a compliment . [??] )     My oldest friend calls me
3D.

Edge holding of the steel is usually the main interest of prospective purchasers of a sheath knife. The bolster type and material used in the scales is often the second concern. As the Reddman, I use a bolster of brass in many of my hunting knives, with jig bone on special request. A birding knife or bird and trout knife often has no fittings at all, but I do make several patterns that most resemble cutlery with scales inlaid with abalone, antique ivory, or semi-precious stone. I make a "bill's Granny" knife that most often becomes a kitchen or camp knife. The majority of my knives are drilled for a lanyard to make it easier to use and hang up. The sheath only becomes secondary art for many of these. I attempt to match the personality of the knife with the sheath design.
