A black steel blade is a very good choice for maintenance purposes, just treat it like a fine gun... I do suggest that a vegetable oil be utilized though, so oil types are simply not good for use in food. The more primitive styles are often forged, an receive hollow ground, flat ground, and canell ground treatment. I feel that the forged edge has superior edge holding properties than strictly stock removal grinds. The handle of the primitive styles is usually of a simpler, less exotic material than most collector grade of knife. The professional Knifemakers Association has a number of makers that specialize in the more primitive hunting knives.
I have made many double edged knives, tanto patterns, and used titanium scales on varied non-hunter style knives. I have camping, hiking, fishing patterns in other locations in the Reddknives site. Feel free to browse thru the pages to see many of the samples I display.
