My very first knife was made in 1956. Being a farmer's kid, I learned how to forge from an old Blacksmith in my hometown. The blacksmith taught me how to weld using a coal forge while sharpening plows for use on the farm, and then instructed me and assisted in the fabrication of my first forged knife after all  the plows had been sharpened.  It was a layered carbon steel knife about 14 inches long.  I lost it from out of a tool box while driving a farm tractor ... my dad found it some years later in a $500 tractor tire. It must have been a pretty good piece of steel ... it didn't even bend or break.
( The only thing BROKE was ME ... dad made me pay for the tire for being so clumsy to lose the knife . )
The next Spring my dad decided that he needed Machetes to clear the brush from the canal ditch-banks.
I cut them from old cross-cut saws, and made handle scales, I riveted them on with Combine sythe rivets. I made about 40 of them. The old farm shop still had half a dozen of those old Machetes hanging on the wall the last time I was there.  Hope the new farmer doesn't find one in a tractor tire someday.
I've never seen a piece of STEEL that did't want to be a KNIFE !!

I've always loved a handmade knife. Cutlery became a major contribuiter to my efforts in fixed blade knives. Folder, linerlock and lockback styles guided me in development of my art knife types using damascus I made as a learning bladesmith. I learned to forge on a coal fired forge that belonged to my grand father. My first forged knife was a Bowie. Self defense knives were not my earliest efforts.
